There are many different ways that people can play football squares, also known as Super Bowl Squares, so we'll try to sum up some of the different options. Most people play during the Super Bowl, but football squares can played for any other single game, or in some cases you can use the same squares for multiple games. The basics of the game are the following:

Create the grid

Start off with an empty  grid. This can be 10x10 which will give you 100 Squares or a 5x5 with 25 squares.  This was our option this year since it was the first year not as many participants so the odds are even better!

Assign one team columns & one rows.

This year the New England Patriots get the rows and the Los Angeles Rams get the columns.  This is also where you pick the random placement of the numbers.  I had Russ pick the first number for the columns and rows without knowing what I was asking him to do.  This way next step is even more random.

Place names in squares.

If you are using this as a betting mechanism then there are online sites you can visit that will actually do the squares for you and allow your participants to put their own names in the squares.  This year for ours we just put them in on a First-come/First-served basis and since Russ picked the numbers randomly it was super easy.  If you ever want to create your own for any reason here is a site that offers a service for payment. superbowlsquares.org

Get ready for the game!

Your Football Squares grid is now complete, and you just need to wait til the game is played to determine who will be your winners.

A winner will be determined at the end of the 1st quarter, 2nd quarter, 3rd quarter, and Final Game score. The winner is determined by looking at the last number in each teams' score, and then matching those numbers on the grid and seeing which square intersects those two numbers.

An example would be if the Rams versus the Patriots in the Super Bowl, and the score at end of the game was Rams 23, and Patriots 14. The last number for the Rams is 3, and the last number for the Patriots is 4. The square on the grid that has the Rams with a number of 3, and Patriots score of 4, would be the winner.
